Where it goes wrong in practice
Seven empty slots means leaving sales on the table
Etsy gives you ten images and buyers scroll through all of them. Three photos feels like half a story — and on a platform where trust in the maker is the main reason to buy, a thin listing is a red flag.
The thumbnail gets cropped and nobody notices
In search results, Etsy shows a landscape crop of your first image. A portrait photo with the product up top loses exactly the part that matters — and with it, the click.
Handmade often means: no time for photography
If you make things yourself, your hands are already full with making. Photography keeps getting pushed to "someday", and meanwhile your listing runs on two phone photos shot under kitchen light.
Ten slots, one upload
You photograph your product once, laid flat or on a hanger. The set that comes out fills your listing from thumbnail to detail shot.
- A model shot as your first photo — people click on people, and the crop keeps the product inside the landscape frame
- Mood shot with warm context (5 credits) — the Etsy look, without an afternoon of styling
- Detail photos of material and finish — free crops, and for jewelry and accessories, an automatic close-up
- The pack shot on white for scale and overview — 1 credit
- Title and description for your listing, in four languages — Etsy is international, so is your copy
Why the first image is almost everything
Etsy search results are a wall of thumbnails: buyers don't compare ten listings, they click on one image. That image has to do three things at once — show the product, set the mood, and survive a landscape crop. After that, the remaining slots need to remove doubt: scale, material, back view, context. That's not really a photography problem anymore, it's a sequencing problem — and the set above is that sequence. If you also sell through your own shop, you use the same images: every format comes free from the same shot.
In three steps
- Photograph your product. Laid flat or on a hanger, in daylight, showing the whole piece. One photo is enough.
- Pick your style once. Model and lighting — the warmer end of the spectrum suits Etsy.
- Fill your listing. Download the set and order the images: model, mood, detail, scale, pack shot.

Frequently asked questions
Etsy is all about handmade — is AI imagery even allowed?
Etsy's rules are about the product: it needs to be genuinely made or designed by you. How you photograph it is up to you. The image also shows your real product — it's generated from your own photo, not invented — and the machine-readable AI label is included automatically.
What's the best first image for Etsy?
A model shot or mood shot with the product large and centered, so the landscape crop in search results keeps the product in frame. A bare pack shot as your first image nearly always performs worse on Etsy.
How do I show the scale of my product?
On the model: a buyer can tell at a glance how big a bag or piece of jewelry really is. For small items, we automatically create a detail crop — a close-up on the full-body shot would be too small to see.
I sell internationally — does this help with languages?
Yes. Copy comes in four languages (NL, EN, DE, FR) — English for your listing itself, the rest for your own shop or other channels.
What does a shop with 30 listings cost?
30 listings × 4 credits = 120 credits: one package of € 64 for 200 credits, leaving you 80 for mood shots and extra poses.
