Product photos for Zalando approved on the first try

Zalando is strict about images: the wrong background, a model without shoes, or a prop in shot, and your item won't make it into the catalogue. Here are the requirements in plain language — and the route that meets them in one go.

Neutral background and portrait framing, per the partner guidelines · Models wear shoes — the requirement behind most rejections · Multiple images per item: model front and back, pack shot, detail · Try six images free, no account needed

The short answer

Product Photos for Zalando: Meet the Requirements in One Upload

  • Zalando publishes clear requirements for partner imagery: portrait framing, a neutral light background (not pure white), and model photos free of distracting settings or props.
  • The best-known stumbling blocks: models must wear shoes (except for swimwear, nightwear and underwear), and lifestyle shots are only allowed as extra images, never as the main image.
  • A rejected upload doesn't cost you a fine, but it does cost time: your item stays offline for days or weeks while your competitor keeps selling.
  • One upload gets you a set that meets these requirements — and you can use those same images in your own shop and on social media too.

Where it goes wrong in practice

The requirements are scattered and keep changing

File format, aspect ratio, background colour, what a model can and can't wear — it's all buried in partner documentation that gets updated regularly. Most small brands only discover a requirement once they've been rejected.

Your best photos are exactly the wrong ones

The lifestyle shot that kills it on Instagram — model on a terrace, gorgeous light — is precisely what gets rejected as a Zalando main image: setting, props, distraction. You need two kinds of images, not one.

Every rejection means lost revenue

The item exists, the stock is there, only the image doesn't qualify. Every day spent waiting on a new shoot or a fix is a day a shopper buys from someone else instead.

One upload, one marketplace-ready set

You upload one photo of the item. The set that comes out is built around what marketplaces require — and what your own shop needs too.

  • Model shots on a neutral, even background, in portrait framing — no props, no distracting setting
  • Models wear shoes; not for swimwear, nightwear and underwear — exactly as the guidelines require
  • Front and back view of the same model, plus a pack shot and a detail photo
  • Every format from the same image — the marketplace's portrait frame plus your own square and story versions, free
  • We create the lifestyle shot for your own homepage and social separately — where it actually belongs

Why consistency matters twice as much on a marketplace

On your own site, you set the context; on Zalando, you're lined up next to a hundred competitors. A catalogue where every item shares the same model, the same light and the same framing reads as a brand — a catalogue with inconsistent images reads as a reseller. Zalando's own guidelines ask for models that represent your size range for good reason: alongside the forty house models, you can create a custom model matching your target audience's build when needed. For how to keep that same consistency in your own shop, see photographing clothing for your webshop.

In three steps

  1. Upload one photo per item. Or connect your webshop and let the pipeline pull in your entire catalogue.
  2. We build the marketplace set. Model front and back, pack shot, detail — neutral background, portrait framing, shoes on.
  3. Deliver it, and publish it yourself. The same images go to Zalando, your own shop and your socials. One set, three channels.

Frequently asked questions

Do you guarantee Zalando will approve my images?

No — nobody can honestly promise that, since Zalando does its own review and regularly tightens its guidelines. What we do is build the set around the published requirements (neutral background, portrait framing, shoes, no props), so you don't trip over the usual issues.

Why not a pure white background?

Zalando actually asks for no pure white on model shots, but a light, neutral tone instead. For marketplaces that do require white (like Amazon or Bol), the pack shot on pure white comes from the same upload.

Can I use the same images in my own shop?

Yes, without limits — the images are yours. In fact, that's the whole point: one set for Zalando, your own shop and your socials, in every format.

What about AI labelling on a marketplace?

Platforms are starting to ask at upload whether an image was machine-generated. Every image we deliver carries the machine-readable AI Act label in the file itself — so you can simply answer yes, with the proof built in.

I also sell via Bol and Amazon — does this work there too?

Yes. The pack shot on pure white covers their main-image requirements, and the formats come free from the same image. See also product photos for Bol.com.
